The fire at 254 Westfield Ave., a four-family home, had reached four alarms by about 5 p.m., department spokespeople said in a statement.
All EFD units, as well as mutual aid, were at the scene, the department also said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. About 20 people were displaced, WABC 7 reported.
Firefighters managed to largely contain the damage to just the single structure, preventing it from spreading to other adjacent homes on the densely populated street, WABC 7 also reported.
